The Bukit Bail Fund of Pittsburgh is doing its first set of BAILOUTS over the week of Valentine's Day! To celebrate this righteous return of people to their communities, you are invited to join us on February 14, 2019 for a rally at the Allegheny County Jail (ACJ), followed by a celebration of love and freedom in the evening with dinner, conversation, performances by radical artists, and more! More information about the Bukit Bail Fund can be found below. Event overview: 6:30 pm - Start time - snacks and social Earlier in the day: Action outside of ACJ - More info TBA ~Why do we need a community bail fund in Pittsburgh?~ 81% of inmates at ACJ have not been convicted of a crime. They are only being held because they cannot afford to post bail before their trial. Their freedom cannot wait. Black people and other People of Color end up behind bars more than anyone else — Black people get incarcerated at more than five times the rate of white people. People needlessly suffer and often even die in jail while waiting on their hearings, especially if they are POC, trans, disabled, or poor. In 2017, four people died at ACJ due to medical neglect, and historically such deaths occur within the first few days of someone’s arrival. All people in prisons and jails deserve freedom — to be returned to their communities, and helped with the necessary resources, healing, and conflict resolution. But we know that we can’t pass out holding our breaths while we wait for politicians to become less racist and classist, and close the jails and prisons. ~What does the bail fund do?~ The Bukit Bail Fund will be using the money we raise to bail out the most historically oppressed and vulnerable in the jail. Over the past year, we have raised enough seed money to do our first few bail outs this February. This is a reason to celebrate and spread the word! We invite you to join us for our day of action in memory of Frank "Bukit" Smart, Jr. and everyone else who has lost their life to the neglect and active abuse of the ACJ. In solidarity with all their families, friends, and loved ones, let’s spread the #LoveBeyondBars! PRK Pittsburgh is raising money for Steel City Organized for Radical Community Health (SCORCH), who provide free medical support to communities and at protests. Come out to Babyland and belt your favorite protest anthems for the folks that will fix your face the next time you get hit with a CS gas canister! $5-10 donation! No one turned away for lack of funds. I'm excited to send you word about a presentation happening Friday March 8 at the Union Project, by a friend traveling in from Sacramento, California. The purposes of the presentation are to remember actions that took place in a serious situation where hundreds of people confronted the far right in 2016, and to continue to generate letter writing and other forms of support for those indicted, during trial and sentencing. The presentation deals with the convergence of anti-fascists that came together on June 26, 2016 in Sacramento, a rather unique coalition of groups developed roles and strategies for support and self-defense when 9 people were sent to the hospital. This event will include a talk by a member of Antifa Sacramento and a Q&A. All 9 people have recovered from their injuries, but the need for continuity of solidarity and connections across cities and regions is ever present. If you can help announce this event locally from person to person, that would be much appreciated! We are asking that people leave info away from social media for the moment.
